embracing your Wellness for Summer

Embrace the Holistic Wisdom of Summer for Conscious Health and Happiness

As summer swiftly approaches, we find ourselves longing for more time in the sun, late-night gatherings, and the delight of fresh fruits. In Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine, this season is celebrated as a time of abundance and the reign of the fire element.

The Significance of June 21st and the weeks around this day: The Summer Solstice

June 21st marks the Summer Solstice, the official beginning of summer. In Chinese medicine, this time of year is considered the most yang, embodying warmth, light, and expansion. Similarly, in Ayurveda, summer is known as the Pitta Season, characterized by the dominance of the fire element, supported by water. As spring fades and summer's warmth sets in, this combination of fire and water creates the Pitta Dosha, emphasizing fire's prominence.

The increased daylight and warmth of summer encourage the expansion of our consciousness, inviting us into a more expansive state of being. As nature changes with the season, so does our body. By tuning into these changes through mindful movement, lifestyle adjustments, and dietary choices, we can harness the growth and expansion that summer offers.

Understanding the Element of Summer

In both Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, there are five elements: wood, fire, earth, water, and metal. Summer is governed by the fire element, which influences joy, enthusiasm, vitality, and expansion. The heart is the organ most associated with the fire element. To protect your heart health during summer, it’s crucial to adopt wellness measures that support and balance the fire element, harmonizing with the seasonal changes.

Recognizing Fire Element Imbalance

Common signs of a fire element imbalance include:

  • Feeling scattered

  • Short temper

  • Impatience and agitation

  • Mood swings

  • Overheating

  • Heartburn

  • Smelly gas

  • Loose stools

  • Stress

  • Irritation

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Blood pressure issues

  • Sleep troubles

  • Brain fog

When the fire element is balanced, your mind is calm, your sleep is restful, and your heart remains healthy.

Fire Element Summer Solstice

Harnessing the Power of Summer

Here are holistic ways to embrace summer, balance the fire element, and enhance your health:

Eat with the Seasons:

Summer’s high heat and active fire element can disrupt your digestive system. To balance these tendencies, consume light, nutrient-dense, cooling, and hydrating foods. These foods help clear heat from your body and maintain hydration.

Enjoy summer fruits like watermelon, papaya, cherries, and berries. Incorporate cooling foods such as zucchini, asparagus, and spinach. Sip on summer teas like green tea and mint tea to stay refreshed and balanced.

Fruits are a great way to cleanse your body, eliminate toxins, alkalize the system during the summer, and help with stress reduction.

Change Up Your Movement:

Summer's increased energy may inspire more physical activity. Engage in cardio workouts like walking, running, and swimming to boost cardiovascular health and circulation. However, avoid outdoor activities during peak sun hours (10 am - 2 pm).

For yogis, consider gentle, forward-folding practices. Focus on restorative sessions that soothe the mind and nourish the nervous system. If you prefer hot, sweaty practices, schedule them in the morning and balance them with gentler routines throughout the week.

Align Your Sleep Cycle with the Season:

With longer summer days, rise with the sun and enjoy outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day. An afternoon nap can help you recharge when the temperature peaks. Aligning your sleep cycle with the season helps balance your circadian rhythm, promoting better sleep and overall health.

Stay Hydrated:

Beyond drinking water, restore your body with minerals and electrolytes. Sweat depletes sodium levels, so include hydrating foods, coconut water, or add a pinch of sea salt to your water to maintain hydration and balance.

Summer Self-Care:

Joy is the emotion linked to the fire element. If you’re feeling nervous or agitated, your fire element may be imbalanced. Physical care can stabilize your emotions and vice versa. Explore new activities, nurture creative projects, and seek joy.

Connect with nature by walking barefoot in your yard, which calms your body and encourages movement. Enjoy al fresco dinners or picnics with loved ones to enhance your connections and savor the season.

Natural Therapies for the Summer Season

Natural Therapies for the Summer Season:

If summer leaves you feeling run down, consider natural therapies to uplift yang, qi, and blood energy.

  • Lomi Lomi Nui Hawaiian Massage is a deeply relaxing ancient technique which in the past was practiced by the Kahunas or so called Shamans of Hawaii. The Lomi Lomi Nui practitioner uses their positive intention, soft, soothing strokes and their maná (not to be mistaken with Qi) and their conscious Ha (breath) to release tensions, emotional blockages stored in the unconcious or body tissues and realign the body with mind and spirit. A deeply relaxing and harmonizing massage, offering clarity and calm to its receiver.

  • Acupressure and Método Vibria: Balance your body’s qi, promote circulation, and heal from within. Acupressure, Reflexology can regulate body temperature, has the potential to reduce inflammation, and address imbalances. Vibria® experience  uses a unique technique where specifically designed frequency tuning forks are introduced to the body’s acupressure and acupuncture points and to the reflexology points on the face during a soft vibrational relaxing massage. Gentle and heavenly.

  • Vibroacoustic Sound Healing Massage Therapy: Relax and connect with your body through a rediscovered biohack: Vibroacoustic Sound Massage. These therapies boost circulation and encourage balance. Explore these services further at BlueZoneZen. I personally highly recommend a manual sound massage where the practitioner’s personal intention is combined and transmitted through the medium, with the help of magical frequencies and sounds through the vibrational instruments. Jonathan Goldman a renowned composer, musician, teacher stated that: intention + frequency = healing (Jonathan Goldman is an award-winning musician, composer, writer, teacher, and chant master.
